Now let’s talk about the precursor of sushi burger, Japanese rice burgers. Rice bun is not new, in fact, it has been in Japan since the 1980s. It was first invented by a Japanese fast food chain MOS burger, as a special burger, but due to the popularity, the rice burger became the staple for MOS burger. It was until later on, that other fast-food chain in Asian decided to sell similar rice burgers. In a way, these rice burger is a faster and easier way to eat more traditional Japanese dishes like the Gyudon (beef bowl), where instead of having the beef only on top of the rice in a bowl, the rice burger simplified it by sandwiching the beef between two rice buns and now you can eat it as you go, while still getting the delicious and filling meal you want. Interestingly, Japanese rice burger didn’t go in a similar routine where they combine sushi elements to the rice burger like they did in the western hemisphere. But then again, there are already a lot of variation of sushi within Japan that the current rice burger are much more interesting.
