Sea Pineapple Sushi

This is a recipe that is slight “out there”. While sea pineapples are a significant part of Korean culture, they have not had much popularity among the rest of the world. For those not in the know how, a sea pineapple is a sort of ascidiacea or sea squirt. While they do grow naturally in shallow water ecosystems, a huge portion of them is cultivated and grown in Korea and Japan. These slimy creatures have a predominantly ammonia and iodine like taste to them owing to the minute presence of cynthiaol in their bodies. While this may be a little off putting to some food enthusiasts, many Korean aficionados attest to the fact that it goes really well with the taste of sake. Kani means crab in Japanese. However, unlike the common miso that is found in Japan. Kani Miso refers to the crab brain and other inner organs. But do not let that idea put you off as it is actually quite delicious when made properly. In fact Kani Miso is rather rare, as each crab only contain little amount of this delicacy. For those who are unfamiliar with it, Fugu is a type of pufferfish that produces a potent Neurotoxin, [Tetrodotoxin TTX]. The neurotoxin blocks the exchange of signals between the brain and muscles and causes death due to asphyxiation. It should be noted though that most deaths to Fugu are because of improper preparation at home or by untrained professionals. Chefs who prepare Fugu in Japanese restaurants are trained for several years to prepare the fish properly so that it can be consumed without risk. In fact, to serve fugu, you need the proper license and years of experience. Fugu is a rare and unique sushi that is delicious and something you should definitely consider if you have the chance. Natto. You can smell it the moment you open up a box containing it. Whether you like the smell, however, is questionable. Some say its an acquired taste.

What is it though? Natto is basically fermented soybeans. It is traditionally eaten as a part of a Japanese breakfast alongside, rice and miso soup.
